Henneke, you are such a master of writing! I’ll continue to practice and improve my skills, and I hope I’ll become as good as you are 🙂
I thought of using the metaphor as a springboard to explain time management over the post, using both “lessons”. Do you think that would be fine? It’s a bit like a metaphoric post…
Wow! The last assignment… Here it is:
The chilly fall was seeping into the city with the already gray sky.
The days were getting shorter and colder.
My first month in Beijing was over.
I felt a bit more accustomed to the place that is to become my home for the year. But something strange started happening.
My eyes were failing me. People, places, started to seem hazy. I couldn’t see details. I found myself squinting, pressuring my eyes to do their job.
It’s something I’ve never felt before. I could always see to the distance, like my grandmother. Starting to be nearsighted, now, in this strange new city, was against my plans.
I wanted everything to appear crisp, clear, obvious. Physically, but also mentally. I desperately wanted to see how this year would turn out. But I couldn’t. The future, and the distance, both seemed blurry.
But then I realized what I’m being taught.
Faith. Faith is seeing farther than the eyes can see. Beyond what the eyes can imagine. It’s knowing that things exist even if you can’t see them yet. Even if you can’t see them at all.
Slowly, as I learned to live with uncertainty, I got my eyesight back.
… {now I can start a post about dealing with uncertainty}.
