Other relevant stuff: Both went to good private schools on O’ahu followed by prestigious East Coast colleges. After graduation, they got jobs in Boston in finance until the market crashed in the 2008. Took the money they’d been saving for a down payment on a suburban home and bought acreage on the Hamakua Coast. Newly parceled tracks that belonged to the sugarcane companies.
Dreams about: Creating a sustainable family business that will give back to Hawaii and help their immediate family and maybe even their extended family survive the uncertain future.
Keeps awake at night: Making sure they have enough to create a secure future for their girls. Hope that their girls have a respect for their heritage & family. But educated enough to have choices.
Is afraid to lose… Home. Everything they have is invested in their home business. Not too many good paying jobs in paradise. You have to create your own.
How does she/he make decisions? Talk things over with friends and family, research (web), and then decide together.
Who does he trust and asks for advice? Kapuna (elders), trusted websites, experts in Hilo and their neighbors.
What’s important in life? Family and friends. Good to be able to work your own land. Take time to appreciate everyday life. Give back.
